About Us
Highwood Farm is located on the geologically important Oak Ridges Moraine in north Durham Region, northeast of Toronto. The farm is
comprised of several acres of rolling hills of pasture for livestock grazing, mature mixed stands of deciduous and coniferous trees and wetlands.
The farm has been in the family for close to 60 years with an objective of maintaining, preserving and enhancing this unique and natural landscape. Historically, grazing cattle have helped maintain the pastures from invasive species while the woodlands provided the required firewood and fence posts.
In the mid 1990’s, a portable Wood-Mizer sawmill was acquired to recycle the best wood from dead or fallen timber in the form of useful lumber for farm purposes rather than see these logs cut up for the fireplace. With many of the trees being well in excess of 100 years old, the size of the lumber which could be cut and reclaimed was impressive as well as beautiful.
We have since discovered the sawmill also allows us to open up and reveal the special beauty inherent in secondary logs being those with especially interesting grain patterns, spalting, knots, colours, cavities and other one of a kind features appreciated by artisans.
Today, as the woodlot continues to mature, there is a surplus of lumber, wood for artisans, firewood, kindling and offcuts which is offered for sale from the available inventory or to order as supply becomes available.
